Yes, in fact, this is now the default mechanism in the build process  
we recommend for doing UI customizations.  There have been a few  
tutorials put together, but for the most part, anything that goes in  
[dspace-source]/dspace/modules is a web-application overlay and  
customizations can be maintained there...
