I've received null mapfiles, but only when something went seriously
wrong before the first item could be imported, and there was always
some sort of message.  To just quit is very strange.

I don't suppose there is anything in the DSpace log that would provide
a clue?

You could try running the command under a debugging tool like strace
or truss(?) to see what it was doing just before it quit.  Or an
interactive debugger, for that matter, but my gut is telling me the
only problem with DSpace itself in this instance is that it is not
emitting an error message for whatever has gone wrong.
