Hi, Every six months, the Webometrics ranking is being updated. The july edition will come out soon. It's important to stress the fact that this ranking is based on visibility in search engines & counts the number of incoming links to your reopsitory.
In order to measure these attributes, it's a prerequisite that your repository has a unique URL, and is not a subdomain from another URL. to give an example: http://www.myuniversity.edu/dspace => NOT GOOD http://dspace.myuniversity.edu => GOOD To understand why, look at the type of queries in Yahoo, they use to get the number of incoming links. linkdomain:dspace.myuniversity.edu -site:dspace.myuniversity.edu (gives all the links to the dspace, excluding those links coming from within the repository) Alternatively, you can use the Yahoo site explorer to find out more details about your incoming links. http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ It's probably not a good idea to change your URL right now, for inclusion in the ranking of July, but rather change it in the coming months, so you have time to *ensure that people start linking to your new URL*. If you are using hdl.net as reference url's to your items, you can ensure that links to items stay persistent, even though you are changing the url of your repository. Every edition of the webometrics rankings, the way they measure some repositories can be tuned//affected. If your repository or institution is affected, it might be wise to get into dialogue with Webometrics BEFORE the updated ranking is published. Often, traffic from URLS are being combined, or split up. Sometimes these changes are positive for your ranking, sometimes they are negative. Note that these changes might affect the repository ranking, the university ranking, or both. Affected institutions in July 2009 (SOURCE: http://internetlab.blogspot.com/) • University of Helsinki. • Imperial College • University of Manchester • Technical University of Munich • Caltech & Jet Propulsion Laboratory • Pennsylvania State University • University of Trier • Harvard Business School will be merged with Harvard University and the former entry will be deleted. • *Johns Hopkings* • *UNAM* • Cardiff University • UPMC • Universität Zurich • Ludwig Maximilians Universität Munchen • Technische Universität Dortmund. • Barcelona, Autónoma de Barcelona and Politècnica de Catalunya. • *universities de Strasbourg* • Kansas State, Northeastern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign • Under consideration merging the Dutch University Hospitals with their corresponding Universities • The City College (CUNY) • Lund Institute of Technology • There a few universities with faculties having fully independent domains. As there is central domain all these extra entries will be deleted but the data will not combined. Currently this applies to University of Zagreb , Warsaw University and Universidad de la República (Uruguay).
