Thank you helix84, That was a great response. I think I understand (better).

I am moving an established dspace 1.7.2 system to new server hardware. The
new server hardware happens to be in the amazon cloud.
I am not the owner of the source system nor can I log into it.
The destination system is a fresh install of dspace 1.7.2.
I inherited this project after an attempt to migrate using AIP failed. I
have no information of why AIP failed.

I have a dspace export simple archive format directory structure from the
source system.
I can view (via browser) the source system and see the communities and
collections, and their postfix values.

My goal is to honor all old handle related bookmarks/references on the new
system.

Do I have any other options for importing, other than the cli dspace import
command?

>From what you've said (and I read the links you pointed out) it looks like I
need to:

1) set the handle.prefix in dspace.cfg on the new system to the
handle.prefix on the source system
2) create the community's via the gui
3) create the collections via the gui
4) preform surgery on postgres to replace the postfix values applied to the
communities and collections so they mach those on the source system.
5) update handle_seq in postgres on the new system beyond the last value
assigned in the source system
6) import the collections. I assume the items keep their handle postfix
values.
7) send update to the folks at handle.net

Am I getting close?

Thanks for your help,
Gene
