OK, don't panic. Your data is most likely safe even if the DSpace
installation or configuration is broken. The worst case scenario is
just that you would reinstall DSpace and it would find your existing
data.

But first, let's try to configure Tomcat to find your webapps. You
were using method 1, but let's use method 2 now, it's quite simple and
doesn't require you to copy anything.

Go to this page

scroll down to Step 8 and do the part starting "Alternatively, ..."
Point the path to dspace to your dspace installation directory, so
according to your dspace.cfg, you would have
docBase="/dspace/webapps/xmlui" for xmlui etc. After you finish
editing server.xml, restart Tomcat.

Remember that if you use method 2 or 3, you won't have to copy webapps
when upgrading DSpace, Tomcat already knows where they're deployed.
