I don't think it's finished, so I wouldn't recommend using it in production. That being said, I'm sure Mark Diggory / @mire would be happy if you tried it in you testing environment and gave him any feedback (in Jira comments). Thus you still have the possibility to voice any concerns and suggestions and have them resolved by the time the code hits a public DSpace release. The easiest way to find out if it works with a particular DSpace version is to try it! :) Based solely on the date of the patch, it should be compatible with 1.8 and require some work to port it to 3.0.
