Would simply need to be built against a more recent MySQL version, which is not 
needed for
Debian Stable, for which these packages are built.

Kurt: the simplest thing is really to build your own packages. It is easy.
You can use cowbuilder and/or pbuilder (you'll find how-to's everywhere [0]) 
and then simply:
dget -x 
http://packages.kirya.net/debian/pool/main/d/dspam/dspam_3.9.1~rc1+git20100814-1.dsc
cd dspam/
pdebuild --buildresult ../ --debbuildopts -sa

And you'll get your packages in ../
