I agree with everything you said Steve. We all need to try to teach those new
to Dstar. I feel like I have done that and other locals as well. One local
dstar user WB4MAK Mack McCormick went as far as inviting as many as 25 hams
to his own house and put on a demo with powerpoint and even provided radio
programming for the ones that brought one with them. On the other side of the
coin, before I bought my first dstar radio there is no telling how many hours I
spent reading about it and its uses and numerous forums at different hamfest to
educate myself on how it all worked and the different radio programming
methods. I guess what I am trying to say is that dstar is like everything else
a person needs to do some on their own since it is so new and the learning
curve is hugh. I in noway would refuse to help any ham new to dstar and am
happy to do so.
I think people are confusing the one touch reply with user callsign routing.
One touch is used for when you hear the station calling and want to respond to
him right then and thereand one touch will capture the the data on that
Transmission if you get it before another station keys up. You are correct that
when using another hams specific call in the UR call field and rely on the
system to find them that it could take a long time for the system to update
across all the gateways.
