Hi Greg and list,

I have been studying this stuff on the ID800 a little bit. I usually
use the cloning software to program the radio but I have tried some
manual operation.

Most folks keep the radio in VFO mode kinda like a scratch pad - so do I.

This morning I found the little asterisk symbol above the BK / TONE /
T-Scan press button (middle button under the display).

The flashing asterisk - little bitty thing means the radio has heard a
call sign and maybe captured the call. I say this because the next
step is to press and hold the TONE key and the captured call will show
in the display. I have found that sometimes I get NO CALL when I try
and capture a call.

This time I captured N5NIR's call sign. Again this is in VFO and NOT
Memory. Next I press SET on the mic. This gives three choices. Set
CALLS, Set MESSAGE, or Set SET...At this point, SET and ENT let you
scroll up and down between URCALL (who you want to call, Either a
user's call sign or /XXXXX B for calling a distant gateway repeater),
RPT1C (Same as RPT1 - Local Repeater), RPT2C (Same as Repeater2 -
Either NOT USE for local only, or G for XXXXX G for
Gateway/Reflector/Dongle use), RXCALL, RXRPT1, RXRPT2, MYCALL, and
back to URCALL.

RXCALL, RXRPT1 and RXRPT2 stay blank unless you have Auto RxCAll and /
or Auto RX REPT Call Write enabled in the DV SET Mode.

This is probably a good time to mention that CLR or a brief PTT takes
you out of SET.

OK, N5NIR is captured to the URCall in the VFO. To view this press
CLR, then SET (choose CALLS, then press SET or ENT till you scroll to
UrCALL....Press and HOLD SET will display the first 6 characters of
the call, BRIEFLY.....from UrCALL, press and hold BAND and the UrCALL
is displayed, SET and ENT let you scroll through all eight characters,
and you can edit the UrCALL at this point. Press and HOLD BAND when
you are finished...

>From what I can tell, you cannot transfer the UrCALL from here
directly to a memory. You first have to store the UrCall in one of
the UR Memories, and then to a channel memory.

So hit CLR, then press SET, choose CALLS, and Choose UrCall...At this
point you can rotate the ch sel and choose UR 01 thru 99. (I believe
00 is HARD WRITTEN CQCQCQ and cannot be overwritten). For grins I
went to UR 05, the contents of UR 05 were displayed, /W6HHD B...I
pressed FUNCT and then MW, and N5NIR overwrote /W6HHD B.

So now the captured call sign is stored to a UR memory.

Next Press CLR, then MR/CALL to go from VFO to Memory channels. I
choose memory 102 to stop on. Again, this time in Memory Channels,
press SET, choose CALLS, then choose UrCALL...You can rotate the ch
sel dial and select any UR between 00 and 99....Press and hold FUNCT
MR, then PRESS and HOLD SET...

The call that you captured and wrote to a UR location, then went to a
memory channel and from the memory channel chose a UR is now written
to the MR channel.

And this is why I recommend using software to program the radio, and
having pre-loaded UR's.

If you just want to answer a call, and NOT store the received call,
just press and hold the TONE key for a few seconds. Either in VFO or
MR. The call sign that you heard with be temporary stored in the UR
slot until you change channels.

Also, there may be errors in the procedure above, Some of this may be
plain wrong, your mileage may vary, and I heartily invite anyone to
make corrections and contributions.

Please forgive the bandwidth. Steve NU5D
