I had similar problem with getting the cloning software to work but the
problem was my USB to Serial adapter. I went to Frys and got a Belkin
USB/Serial
adapter and it worked the first time I tried it. I use port 5 and be sure
to have the baud rate set at 9600. This is with an ID-800 H with Rev 2
software.

Dan,

I think you've run into the reason most cables sold for radio
programming are still Serial. Yes most computers don't come with
Serial ports anymore, but USB to Serial seems to be a very black art
both for the programmer and hardware vendor.

I suggest that you buy or make an OPC478 on a db9 connector, and then
find a USB to Serial adaptor that has a driver someone else has said
works with your OS and hardware.

I've got a Keyspan serial adaptor that works 100% with all my Mac
applications, and all but one thing I've tried it with on Windows.
however it will not work with my ic-w32A programming software from RT
systems. It works fine with the open source Q7A X11 programmer, it
worked when booted into windows via bootcamp to program my tinytrak 2,
it works in parallels/windows with Icoms RS-92 for my ic92ad and in
Mac OS with D-RATS, but not that one program. When I want to use that
software I borrow a different brand of USB to Serial adaptor from our
test lab.

The conversion chipset/driver Icom picked and built in to that adaptor
just doesn't appear to work with your setup, but since it's integrated
you can't just swap it out.

I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I'm fairly sure you
can program your radios if you just get a different cable and separate
USB <-> Serial adaptor. If you decide to use them as clay pigeons,
I'll trade you a whole box of clays for the radios :-)
