I thought that radio's which support GPS-A (2820, 92AD) could display
GPS-A position reports? I could be wrong.

This is incorrect. The G.D annunciator indicates that GPS data is being
sent to the serial port. The G (or A, for GPS-A mode) to the right of
the DV mode indicator indicates that GPS data is being transmitted over
the air. It is not necessary to have G.D on to transmit position
reports.
