An amplifier from that time period may not switch fast enough. You will probably be heard on the local repeater, but once you try to do call sign routing or something that depends on a good header, it may fail. A gain antenna will probably get you better results, if you have a choice. If you are currently R2D2, and it isn't multi-path, a very small increase in signal may solve your problem. R2D2 from a power point of view, means you are almost there, once you cross the threshold you should be solid copy.
