If dsm "hangs" on restart, it sounds like it is not installed correctly.  There 
is a log to look at for problems: /var/log/dstarmon.log

You do not start javAPRSSrvr.  The current version of DStarMonitor handles all 
instances of javAPRSSrvr.  No instances of javAPRSSrvr will be created on a new 
install until serial data is seen on an attached repeater.  Serial data will 
only be seen if the transmitting radio has been properly configured with the 
repeater in RPT1 and the gateway (ID "G") in RPT2.
