I can surf the internet and pass email's rather fast at 128Kbps with the
ID-1.

With the Low Speed Data, I can talk and type at the same time too???
Try that with AX.25.... try that with P-25.....

I am still waiting to see someone with a P-25 radio pass data via a pc,
Have I mentioned I've been waiting for 3 years now. Still waiting.

I don't think anything comes close to the D-STAR as far as commercial
equipment goes, and the only thing that barely touches it is ICOM /
Kenwood's
venture with NEXEDGE digital communications.

I have not seen anything even close for data transmission on the Motorola
front
either....

Right now, the "NEW IN THING" is RoIP; Radio Over Internet Protocol...

Blackberry's and other PDA's with PTT technology (NOT iDEN or Q-Chat)
but Echolink or IRLP, or eQSO on a PDA with a PTT button.... Look around,
it's out
there! Why do you think Motorola bought out Symbol Technologies???
Cause the PDA's that are being made now a days have assignable side buttons
and can do PTT functions with the appropriate software...
I know of a couple of people in the US who are using a blackberry and a
Symbol machine
with this software that enables CDMA echolink like PTT communications....
did you see
that coming??

My thoughts, keep progressing Dstar. IT HAS IT'S PURPOSE and ROLE!

Subject: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] DStar uses

Like many on this group I am considering a purchase of a DStar radio. I was
fascinated with the digital aspect of the Icom radios when they arrived on
the amateur market having wondered if hams would follow the previous
generation and reuse commercial land mobile sets designed for the P25
digital standard possibley setting up trunked systems to cover wide areas.

I find that the more I lean about DStar the less I am impressed with the
data side of the radios. I was looking for radios that would be able to
pass signaficant amounts of data in addtion to a voice channel all at the
same time. Perhaps I am expecting to much. I would like to ask those of
you out there that are active with DStar what you are doing with your radios
in the way of data transmission in addition to voice communications.
