The answer to all those questions is "yes" but I also have a method to my madness: I happen to love the radios and the HAM radio hobby. New and emerging technologies will always cost more. I have one of those AOR digital modems (the 9800) and the original price was almost $600! Now they have a somewhat lesser (but very capable) model for about $350. It's the same with Icom. The first D-Star radio was the ID1 and $1,000! Now they have several models with D-Star capabilities going down as low as $450 for the ID-80 handheld. If the HAM radio industry is to support us with new and cost efficient products, we must also support them by purchasing the products. Whenever D-Star introduces itself in Palm Beach County, I will be ready! Until then, I have 3 very cool analog radios that happen to have the ability to "do digital"!!
