There's not a really good reason why we even need the gateway computer. It
wouldn't take much for the controller to do it all.

But that's not what we got. We have what we have. And what we have doesn't
support the configuration.

The Icom "zone protocol" doesn't use IP.

What I can't believe is that as long as digital protocol have been around, only
one of the major Amateur Radio manufacturers support it. But again, we have
what we have. And we currently have Yaesu, Kenwood, and Alinco who are just not
willing to move into this century!

At least Icom has.

Thank you for you answer here and in the other D-Star forum, but I cannot
believe that in these years where everything is interconnected, we are not able
to use one gateway for more then one repeater.
It's out of the base of the networking. The meaning of the gateway is that it
should be like a gate between different networks: Internet and radio (intranet).
If we can well reach the repeaters via radio (intranet), I cannot think that we
have the need to use internet to make speak togheter the repeaters.

After all we have two subnets that could be used (without thinking about the
callsign routing).
If the gateway should have the 10.0.0.x/8 network, on the other side we could
have different 172.x.x.x repeaters in the intranet...isn't it ?
