The new guy, Earl...
Howdy!
I'm still new to the whole D-star thing, too. I got an ICOM 91AD this past
July, and finally got around to understanding the whole thing yesterday.
There is a steep learning curve, and even though I have only made a handful
of transmissions, the fun of making contacts all over the world without
needing a computer (unless you use the dongle) is amazing!
The 91AD is an HT, and I hook it up to my pick-up antenna while driving
around, and use an extra long antenna when in the house.
It took me the better half of a day to fully understand everything but there
are some really wonderful websites out there. The PAPA system has a whole
youtube video that you can watch that describes how D-star works. (Just type
in D-STAR) in youtube.com and the video is usually in the top 5 videos.
Best of luck!
THe neat thing is, if you are a truck driver, there are all kinds of local
repeaters in different parts of the country you can connect to. If you have
a computer in your big truck, then you can use the computer to connect to
other d-star users.
I have a whole list of resources, please feel free to email me, and I can
send you the list of links.. If anyone else out there wants them, shoot me
an email as well.
