Hi Cat,

First, welcome to the hobby and specifically to D-STAR.

Yes, your Garmin will plug into the side of your 91AD (I've done it many times). You have to set up GPS communications through the menus (or control software on your computer) to activate it. You will need to use the calculator at http://www.aprs-is.net/DPRSCalc.aspx to set up some special message text so that it will be picked up by the D- STAR repeaters and forwarded to the APRS-IS so that you can see your position on the Internet.

You will need to build or buy a cable to go from your Garmin to the 91AD -- Jason at http://www.rpc-electronics.com/contact.php made me up a nice cable for my Garmin to 91AD (It's not in their catalog, but he makes a quality cable) as well as homebrew cables I've made. It is not the same as your programming cable but plugs into the same port.

Two things to remember, that are different than APRS operation. Don't beacon on a repeater and your position will be reported whenever you transmit. (But you need to transmit to have your position reported.)

Sorry about your vision impairment. I also have deteriorating vision. I am blind in one eye and trying to keep the other one going. You might want to get to know Linda Reeder, N7HVF -- (contact info at http://www.xmission.com/~uarc/ab1ip_cluboff.html -- she has a wealth of knowledge and experience as a totally blind ham operator and is always glad to share that knowledge.
