CAT,

Since DStar is a voice system, and not a simple data system like APRS, building
a store and forward system like that would cause you no end of problems, mainly
huge delays in the voice portions.  I have found that if you have a high
quality dual band FM transciever and a DStar HT, you can cross band repeat the
DStar signal for more range.  You can connect your Garmin to your DStar rig and
do the same thing and more that you do with APRS.

We have a extremely nice DStar repeater system here in Tucson, so I don't have
to do that, but I have done some experiementing with further away systems and
it works well.  The key is that your FM transceiver can't distort the audio
signal from one band to the next.  I use my IC-2710 to do this and if you were
listening to the DStar on another DStar radio, you would never know I was
doing.  Now, I have NOT been able to do this through any of our FM repeaters.
I am not sure why.

Once DStar replaces FM, this should not be a problem for your.  Have fun
playing with it.

I have another question for all of you. The DVAP sounds itneresting. . Is there
a way that they could make it like a digipeater, like APRS? I'm just wondering
if that is possible. I am a bicycle mobile ham whom uses APRS ( a garmin deluxe
V and a kenwood d-7) (which sits nicely inside a pack held in the water bottle
cage on the downtube).

Would that be at all feasable?
Just wondering. I LOVE learning about this new bit of technology!
Thank you all for the wonderful questions. a non-technical person like me has a
lightbulb going off just about everytime I read these discussions!
