Duffy,

Programming your radio is actually pretty easy. Hopefully Mark made sure that
you got the programming cable.

From downtown Cincinnati, I see the following repeaters (via the Nearest
repeater function at http://www.dstarinfo.com/maps/Repeaters.aspx)
K8BIG 1 mi

W8RNL 18 mi

W8BI 52 mi

W4DSI 76 mi

The first two are probably the ones that you want to make sure are in the
radio. Head to the D-STAR Calculator at
www.DSTARInfo.com<http://www.DSTARInfo.com>.
Once you are in the Calculator, select the repeater that you will be talking to
and the module. For example, K8BIG is the closest to downtown and has two
modules, a 440 and 2M. Let’s choose 440 for the memory position. Choose the
444.0000 module in the Source Module field and then the Destination Module
field. Leave the Function as “Local Repeater with Gateway”
With everything set, you should see the following below.
Programming for talking on K8BIG (port DV B) to (port DV B)

YOUR::

CQCQCQ

RPT1:

K8BIG▪▪B

RPT2:

K8BIG▪▪G

Set Radio To:

444.0000 MHz Offset +5.0000 MHz

"▪" represents a space

And that’s what you need to put in one of the memory locations. You’ll probably
want to do the same for the 2M module
Programming for talking on K8BIG (port DV C) to (port DV C)

YOUR::

CQCQCQ

RPT1:

K8BIG▪▪C

RPT2:

K8BIG▪▪G

Set Radio To:

145.3500 MHz Offset -0.6000 MHz

"▪" represents a space

Notice that only the Frequency/offset changed, as well as the RPT1

And you’ll just repeat for all of the other repeaters that you want to have in
your radio.

Now, as you grow more familiar with D-STAR, you’ll find that you might use some
of the functions besides “Local Repeater with Gateway”, but don’t worry about
them to begin with.

....well almost. Radio is supposed to be here on Tuesday.

However, in preparation, does anyone have a icf file that they can send me for
their IC-80AD for the Cincinnati, Ohio area so I can load it in when the radio
arrives? It would be most appreciated.

BTW, bought the radio down at HRO in Atlanta when I was down there visiting my
daughter (if anyone wants to share their icf file for the Buford/Braselton
(sp?) area that would also be appreciated since I will be visiting my daughter
in that area quite a bit) and Mark KJ4VO the manager of the local store spent a
lot of time with me explaining D-Star, showing me the repeater, linking to
other reflectors, etc....in fact, he spent the most time with me AFTER I bought
the radio. Best service I ever had from a ham radio store. The guy was great -
many thanks Mark!

Looking forward to playing and meeting new people on D-Star.

Best Regards,

Duffy
