The addition of Dplus to the native Dstar transport system can make for some un-intended consequences. Folks did AOK without Dplus linking for quite some time. Dplus is nice for tying repeaters together for wide area operations and a great add on to the native system. For me, it is easier to set UR=W8KRF and call you than to try and figure out if you are linked / unlinked / or know what repeater you are using.
