Your friend is right.  With regards to Linux it is only officially
supported on the enterprise versions of  Red Hat, SuSE & Red Flag. I
have included a link to oracle's documentation lib that will give you
release notes and install guides for win / lin / Sol.

Chris is absolutely right, I could send you links to install it on
Fedora, SuSE Professional or even FreeBSD.  However if you have issues
then support is going to to be alot harder to find, and trouble
shooting will take a lot longer, which ultimately will lead to more
down time.

You could run it it on white box or Cent OS.  However I recommend that
you go Open Solaris, the install is fully documented on Solaris, the
OS is downloadable, and hey documentation on it is incredible.

Plus they have more and more cool open source apps coming on line for
open solaris -  Postgres and Xen.  They also have an IRC community you
could hop onto as well.
