This reminds me to one of the inofficial user group meetings. I had a
very interesting discussion with a fellow - whose name I unfortunally
forgot - about user groups.
This Indian fellow asked a first confusing question to me. He said: this
is a Linux User Group meeting. We should talk about Linux and that's
what I came here for. Why is nobody talking about Linux?
He told me in India on LUG meetings, people would come in thousands
togeter, talk a whole evening exclusively about Linux. They would hold
presentations, small discussion groups and so on. Nobody would ever come
up with something totally unrelated, such as CBR. As the guy said "when
I talk with someone about something personal, I have friends".
The "western" version of LUG meetings, as I know it, is more a gathering
of people with similar hobbies and thus similar interests. As such it is
not just of importance to talk about Linux, but also to get to know the
other fellows personally.
I believe relatively new "institutions" such as user group meetings are
are at the end produced out of similar events that have been available
before in the roots of a society. In India the teacher is very much
respected. People wandered through the country teaching people about
life and religion for centuries and that is what still happens today at
the user group meetings - in my eyes.
In Germany men have met at least in the last 200 years in places close
to pubs and they drank beer and talked about politics and life. The
typical user group meeting I attended back in Germany was in a pub kind
of place. One would drink beer, talk about politics, the latest
inventions out there in the net and also about Linux.
In Sibiria people would probably get together around fire made from a
freshly cut down tree with one or more bottles of Vodka talk about
woman, "the government" and also about Linux...or maybe not. ;)
As with the meetings, so is it with the mailing lists.
I believe most of the collisions here on the list come from the fact
that many people are just act as they are accustomed to. What might be
okay in one part of the world is causing the worst nightmare in the
other.
Finding a common base has turned out to be a difficult job over the
years. This user group is split into two main parts: the crowd attending
the official meetings and the crowd attending the inofficial meetings.
Well... and maybe a crowd attending neither.
It would be very nice when we would be able to merge the groups and to
synthesize a common base. But until then, why don't we let each other do
what they want and listen each other and learn from us?
Dirk.
