Aaarrrrr, scurvy!!

My guess too, they just blocked the login servers. However I wasn't
able to use a normal http proxy. I had to configure socks5. Some
friends and I are thinking of writing a whitepaper on these things.
Don't want to attract too much heat though ;)

But based down it goes like this: find yourself a place with a neat
(read: unrestricted) internet connection which has a good speed to
your original location. Set up a proxy server there. Preferably on
port 80 because this seems to be QoS'd by our Etisalat friends to have
the highest performance. Also, are they ever going to block HTTP
traffic? Didn't think so.

Other options include, as Brad suggested, to use a vpn connection.
OpenVPN would suit very well. Make sure u 1) rtfm and 2) push the
option "redirect-gateway" to your clients. That will redirect all
traffic on the client computer through the vpn. Then there's some
routing you have to set up on your vpn server in the unrestricted
internet connection location. As I said, I'm trying to get a consise
howto into a white paper. But don't let that stop you experimenting :)

The nice thing about using vpn is that all your traffic gets encrypted
on the way. So forget people trying to snoop on it (did I mean
Etisalat trying to figure out what your sending through?). Better yet,
let OpenVPN listen on port 80 TCP. No way traffic over that port will
ever get blocked.

What do you do when a wall is blocking your view of a hot chick? You
shout to your pall on top of the wall to shout you back a description.
Keep that in mind when you're trying to get normal internet access and
everything will be fine :)
