Have been giving this idea a *lot* of thought.. If you squirted it over tcp/80
then it would be
forced through the unreliable EIM proxy(s) and subject to random
disconnection/timeouts.
At least using udp I get reliable ping times and what has proven to be a pretty
solid setup.
I did try tcp for a while, but I found that tunneling tcp over tcp is a bad
idea and it tended to
queue my traffic in a fairly unpleasant fashion. Especially when trying to
squirt voice encapsulated
in udp over the link. There are a number of papers on the net of the downsides
to tcp over tcp.
At the moment I'm not unhappy with my udp setup, except it was/is a bit of a
pain while in Qatar,
but as I'm not there that often I can live with that. Having to tunnel ssh over
their web proxy just
sucks royally though.
I might try a couple of test tunnels over tcp/80 but I'm not sure I want my
connections recoreded in
the proxy logs. They have a habit of just blackholing ip's deemed to be running
as proxy servers,
and as I'm a home ADSL user rather than a business account I'd have no recourse
to get my other
servers unblocked. Sucks huh ?
With a little investigation, it appears that eim don't block/proxy https://
connections, so 443
might be the go, but again it's the old tcp/udp thing. Maybe I need to run it
on port 53 ;) Wonder
if they throttle dns?
