Gentlemen, maybe I'm delirous and over-paranoid, however. I just
downloaded the latest version of Vidalia (tor wrapper for Windows)
and Privoxy without troubles through Etisalat's proxy. When I use
the software no matter what I do, my IP reported by DNStools.com is
always originating from the UAE. Although I appear to be routing
through several nodes across Europe. I also cannot access any of the
blocked sites like skype.com which I could access before through tor.
I verified on my laptop which is running an MD5 hash checked,
compiled from source tor and privoxy version, and I did originate from
another location (Denmark). Is it possible, however unlikely, that
Etisalat has tampered versions of Vidalia and Privoxy cached on
their proxy and pushes those towards you when you attempt to download?
I know it sounds weird, but I have no explanation why tor isn't
functioning properly with the packages I've downloaded on my windows
box. I verified that I go through privoxy, yet it seems to have no
effect. tor on my laptop (safely MD5 hash checked by the gentoo
package system) and the package on my windows box DO NOT work in same
fashion. What is going on here? Other weird stuff: Going directly
through Etisalat's proxy, I CANNOT login to yahoo.com anymore, the connection
times out. Also the new MSN Live messenger fails to connect. Another weird
thing is that when my connection to the net is NOT tunneled, my Windows Update
site doesn't work properly either. I am unable to get any windows updates
whatsoever. When I tunnel out of Etisalat's network, suddenly I start receiving
Critical updates. Has anyone had any similar issues in the past? Let me know!!
This is really weird. I assure you that all these issues happen while I am
directly connected to my Al Shamil service, no firewalls, no funky gateways.
Some really twisted stuff has been going on in Etisalat's network. I wanna get
to the bottom of this.
