Hello, In case you hadn't noticed we have a new list server. In the past we have been hosted on my personal machines through a combination of Macjordomo (A great, free list server software) and Stalker Internet Mail Server (A great free email server program). This combination was great and had a lot of flexibility but there were two key areas that it was lacking. The first is bounce handling. A bounce in simply an error message you get back when an email does not reach its destination. I had an elaborate setup of scripts and different programs to deal with them but it was a chore to keep up with. To give you an idea, I had stopped processing bounces just over a month ago and in that short time it had gotten to about 100 bounced messages an hour. The other area where we wanted change is getting the archives in a form where they are accessible via the web. So, this weekend we moved all the lists over to CommuniGate Pro hosted by www.ninewire.com. The primary advantages are performance, bounce handling, and web accessible archives. You should notice your messages taking just seconds to go through instead of the 10+ minutes with the old server. Although we are looking to make it a little more elegant you can access the online archives at <http://lists.themacintoshguy.com>. Be patient, some of them can take a little while to access. The biggest benefit from a listmom's perspective is the automatic bounce handling. The way it works is that if one of your messages can't be delivered a message will be sent letting you know that there is a problem and your subscription will be put on hold for 12 hours. If you reply to the notification your subscription will start again, if not the list will try every 12 hours for a few days then remove you from the list. Very cool. I have forwarded all the old addresses to the new lists so you should not have to change anything but if you have mail actions setup you will want to change the addresses to lists.themacintoshguy.com. You will notice a couple things about the new lists that are different. The major difference is in the Digest format. It is now being sent as in attached mime format, we are looking at the other options, if you have any thoughts along these lines feel free to send me a personal message off list. We also have a couple new lists in the works, HomeMac and BusMac (for business) news about those lists coming soon. Enjoy!
