Hello Edward: Your query about the modem options and OS hit a sore
point. First, the recommendation to use an ADB will only work if you
have a dock. Second, I have had problems getting external modems to
work decently under OS 8.x since the duo's internal serial hardware
is a speed bottleneck. You probably will not see the benefit of a 56k
modem, for instance. Things run OK briefly, then something gets
saturated, the connection slows down, stops, and then usually times
out. Third, you may have one of the GV 19 k internals, but the
protocol needed to handle this is no longer supported by most ISP's,
so either the Apple or GV internals both run at 14.4 (they can be
distinguished by the color of their RJ11 plugs GV is blac/dk grey,
beleive apple is green or white, european models have a din connector
which requires an adapter), or by the software installed on the duo.
I've given up on getting the external to run either on my docks or
out of the shared printer/modem port on the duo. The internal is fine
for light surfing and e-mail.
On the other hand, I was able to get GV 56k external to work well -
not at top speed, but without the chokeoff effect either on OS8.1 or
8.5. I don't recall what I did, but the port must be set to "normal",
not compatible, and you must hook up the modem to the printer and
vice versa. I used the latest version of the GV internal modem
software (free download from boca/GV) Turning off appletalk helped at
some point. I lost this functionality with an 8.6 upgrade and haven't
been able to restore it.
I joined the list and continue to lurk in the hopes that the solution
may pop up. I am grateful for all the comments and assistance I have
received on this subject, but, in the absence of a solution, maybe
the appropriate question is: What are the configurations of OS,
duo2300c, modem make/model and settings that people have used to
successfully establish reliable connections at speeds greater than
the internal modems?
