Thanks, Kris, I think this jibes with what I've observed - I
certainly can lock down the top connection speed for the 56k in the
modem script. Compression on/off seemed to have no effect on the
problem. The reliable configuration may have involved a 33.6k modem.

Serial port limited to 57.6 kbps
Since a modem compresses data before sending, you need the serial port to
be about 4x the speed of your modem for peak performance. A 14.4k modem
requires a 57k serial port, for example. I regularly use a 33.6k modem
with my Duo230. The performance is a little less than I get from the same
modem on a desktop machine with a 230k serial port, but it's very reliable
and stable. If your modem chokes, I'd recomending using AT commands to set
the modem to a slower protocol or something, in which case you might as
well just use a less expensive, slower modem.
