Actually, I think a 12/320 Duo 280c is about as nearly "tricked out" as they
ever came. Occasionally you'll see one with more RAM, but it is extremely
rare to see one with a bigger than 320 MB disk since I don't think Apple was
ever putting anything bigger in at that time. Then they switched over to
IDE drives, which is probably why you don't see all kinds of big 2.5" SCSI
drives. However, the occasional Duo 280c with a 775MB drive can be seen, so
there must be 2.5" SCSI drives bigger than 320 MB out there. I just can't
seem to find them.
You are correct that upgrades to get what you REALLY need should be part of
the cost-counting done before the purchase. However, the other point of
upgrades is that sometimes needs change and the balance must be struck
between upgrading and buying a whole new machine. And that's what I'm going
thru right now. Since, short of spending many $100's to try and track down
a 2400 on eBay, the only way to have a tolerably light laptop is to have a
Duo and upgrade it if the standard configs no longer cut it.
