I'm not an authority, but I believe that Cap'n Drews post is incorrect in a
couple of respects. Once the RAM disk is used to boot the computer, the RAM
disk *IS* the startup disk, and the HArd Drive no longer is. Thus, the
reason that Disk First Aid won't work isn't b/c the Hard Drive is the
startup disk. It might be for the following reason:
1.) There are some files open on the drive - Someone already pointed out
that the "Save RAM Disk at shutdown" command might be responsible for this.
2.) File Sharing might be enabled - I suggested that one should disable
file sharing before rebooting with the RAM Disk. AppleTalk should be
disabled as well. (Of course, disabling AppleTalk automatically disables
file sharing...)
3.) Running Disk First Aid from the hard drive will cause problems, too.
The copy of Disk First Aid you use must be located on the RAM Disk.
4.) One can also use a floppy disk instead of a RAM disk, but the amount of
files that can be fit on the disk is severely limited. If one doesn't mind
swapping disks about 500 times, hit ctrl-shift-1 to eject the startup
floppy and insert another floppy. Severe floppy swapping will ensue.
Just some thoughts, I could be completely wrong....
