If you are using system 8.0 or earlier then you probably have OT/PPP 1.0
which all the system 8.6 & 9.0.4 experts on this list have long forgotton
how to use.
Rather than spending hours learning all that computerese stuff about
modem scripts, etc. you might consider abandoning OT/PPP 1.0
and using MacPPP 2.5 available at
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10621
MacPPP 2.5 installs a ConfigPPP control panel. In the space for
the modem init string, just leave it blank. Unlike any other PPP dialer,
MacPPP is idiot proof.

P.S. I know MacPPP works with system 6.0.5 to 7.6.1
I have not tried to see if it works on 8.0 or above.
