Hmmmm.....if the battery is just about a dead short....stick it in, it pulls 
power down to the point where it forces a CPU reset.  Mac resets....power 
supply goes <<grunt>> and tries to dump enough current to charge batt and run 
system.  IF the battery has a bit of life left, the internal resistance may 
rise enough to allow the system to then boot.   

Not good for the unit, BTW.  A dead/shorted batt forces a lot of current thru 
the charging circuit.  You <<could>> actually damage the charging components 
on the logic (tho I'd have to look at a schematic to tell for sure....anyone 
have a 2300 schematic?? <<BIG grin!!>>).  Also, if you are using an older 
adapter, possibly the amperage is just low enough to have a sufficient 
voltage drop when a good but discharged batt is inserted.  

Best to charge ""unknown"" batts with the unit off, THEN try an operational 
start & insert.
