Hi Eric!
Well, so far, all my testing really point to the EN/SC extension and some
conflict with the SCSI bus.
After 5 minutes, the screen will first dim. Then, about 5 minutes later, the
computer freezes. I know that the screen dims after 5 minutes. Checking the
time on the system clock did reveal that 5 minutes later, something is
happening and causes the computer to freeze. The cursor is invisible. If I
move the trackball, the screen undims, but the computer is still frozen.
Then, if I force quit the Finder, the cursor re-appears and the computer
comes to life. But at that point, the menus when clicked, are displayed very
slowly. There is some sluggishness that I can identify. And I already
mentioned that whenever I switch AppleTalk to "Alternate Ethernet", the hard
disk is wrongly reported by 2 control strips as being off, while it's
definitely not off, I can easily hear it spinning. So, that EN/SC extension
is doing something on the SCSI bus. BTW, I've tried "Alternate Ethernet"
with processor cycling ON and OFF, and it doesn't make any difference. I
thought that 5 minutes after the screen was dimmed, the processor was maybe
slowed down, but if it's the case, then it doesn't seem to matter with my
problem, as it has happened when processor cycling was off.
I'm still investigating this, though, as it's really annoying to have to
switch AppleTalk every time I'm done with a file transfer or an Ethernet
access, or I will find the computer frozen.
-Laurent.
