Hi:

I used a very sharp pair of scissors, and you can start with less, and
if it works, great.  If not trim a little more.  You should be able to
cut up to half of the width of the plastic and still have it work. 
Where I work we have a conductive paint that should also work, but the
traces are very small and you would have to be very steady to touch up
the worn areas.  Trimming seems to work well.  I just did it on a Duo
230 that I got off eBay with a dead keyboard, and it worked there also.
