I ran OS8.1 without any problem when I had a 280c. I would suggest doing a
clean install to make sure you don't leave any problem files in the system.
Perhaps OS8.1 was trying to utilize some preferences created under OS8.0
that just didn't jive. Or just a problem during the installation of the
upgrade. Ya never know.

Could even be an incompatible 3rd party extension. Did you try running it
with Mac OS only Extensions selected (via Extensions Manager)?
