I recently put a 36MB ram card and a Global Village modem in my 280c. I
also upgraded to 7.6.1 short time prior. Before, it had a 12MB card,
Express Modem and 7.5.5.

After doing the upgrading I noticed that all worked fine until I put it
in the Duo Dock II. Upon hitting the power on key, it would give the 8
tone bad memory chimes. All I had to do would be to press the reset
button on the back of the dock and it would start up just fine. I could
Shut Down and Restart as much as I want using the normal external
keyboard power key from then on.

As soon as I would take it OUT of the dock and hit the power on key on
the duo's keyboard it would give the 8 note memory fault chime again. I
would have to hit the reset button on the back of the duo. From then on
it would work normally until the next time I put it in the dock, at
which time it would be back to the last paragraph all over again.

So, whenever I switched from docked to undocked or vice versa it would
think it had a memory problem. I finally solved the problem. I can
recreate the problem and I can solve it at will!

To solve the problem all that is required is to Rebuild the Desktop with
all Extensions and Control Panel off EXCEPT Macintosh Easy Open. Then
after it rebuilds, you can reselect your normal set of
Extensions/Control Panels and the computer will work perfectly, without
the above mentioned memory chimes. But, If I rebuild the desktop at some
time later, with any extensions or Control panels ON (other than just
Macintosh Easy Open), the problem will reoccur.

I mention all of this because:
(A) I never had this problem when I had the old memory card and modem
and OS 7.5.5
(B) Maybe it is worth trying to help with the sleep problem.

I don't understand how a desktop rebuild can have any affect on the
bootup process prior to the time before the hard drive even starts to
spin, but it does in this case, and it is repeatable and predictable.
