I've used 7.5.3, 7.5.5 and 8.1 on a Duo 280 with 40mb RAM, and haven't had
any problems.  I Norton it once a week, and keep it running clean, but
that's about it.

having said that, I rarely put the Duo to sleep for longer than about 12
hours at a time, and mosly it's in the Dock.

that's probably not much help, excpet to say that it's not a hopeless case!
