Andrew,

It's not difficult to disconnect the BU battery, you can access its plug 
under the keyboard. Its connector (3 wires, usually red, white and black) 
plugs into the logic board near the front edge of the keyboard opening, 
use a small needlenose plier or similar to carefully wiggle the plug 
loose. Leave it disconnected several hours, overnight worked for me, 
along with the PS and main battery.
