"What we have here is a failure to communicate." -- Strother Martin to Paul Newman in _Cool Hand Luke_ Ass stated by a previousposter, color Duos can only do thousands of colors on a 640x400 screen because of its limited VRAM. Under recent versions of th Mac OS, when you select thousands of colors, the active screen size is automatically reduced from 640x480, similar to 15" LCD monitor that doesn't perform scaling showing a 800x600 patch with black borders. Why it still says "640x480" in the control panel and control strip is the mystery; maybe Apple programmers are just stupid sometimes, maybe Steve Jobs thinks this is logical. In earlier versions of the Mac OS it worked differently. Like a multiscan display, 640x480 and 640x400 were shown as resolution choices. If 640x480 was highlighted, only bit depths up to 256 grays/colors was shown. If 640x400 was highlighted, thousands of colors became an available bit depth. If you were in 640x400 with thousands of colors and switched to 640x480, the bit depth automatically dropped to 256 colors. If you were in 640x480 at any bit depth and switched to 640x400, the bit depth didn't change. If you wanted thousands of colors you had to use the control panel or control strip to select it. The newer behavior is arguably more convenient, but more confusing.
