I use the Ricochet modem script. This way logging on
is just like any other modem. Actually I use the
control strip, remote access, to log on and off. I
did spend some time looking at the specs of the new
modem. If it cannot run Mac ADB with OS 8.6 then I am
not interested. My 2400 has 80MB RAM, Newer
G3/240MHz/1MB, IBM 6.4GB HD and with the L2 cache
turned off, the screen set to one click above dark, I
get an 1.25 hours of battery with the Ricochet on. I
bet that using a USB PC-card will doc your battery
life.

I use the Ricochet everyday and have to say that the
claimed 28.8kbps is low. It "feels" more like 45kbps.
At my work I see downloads above 5kps according to
Netscape. My house is a different story. I usually see
one to two kps. I have found that the Cramers bagel
shop next to Santa Clara University, in the bay area,
has good reception. When traffic is bad, I slip into
Cramers, log into my company and work until the
battery dies. I do this at least twice a week.
