Your assumption is correct. There is 8MB soldered to the motherboard. There
is only room for one memory expansion card. 8+12 would give you 20.

To remove the 12MB module you would need to slide it to the right to
disengage it then lift it out. Install the new one in the reverse order. It
would be a snug fit so some gentle force would likely be required.

Once installed you may need to zap the PRAM to get the 2300 to recognize the
new RAM (as discovered by Laurent Daudelin).
