I had assumed the 20 megs were soldered to

Indeed there is 8MB soldered to the motherboard and you will have to remove
the existing ram to replace it  with your new module.
There is no trick to removing it you simply slide the old module out to the
right and insert the new one in it's place.
Don't worry if it seems to be stuck it's not glued together or anything
like that just use a little more pressure and it will come out!
