First make sure virtual memory is off., and then start yanking exrta 
things you don't need (like QuickDraw 3D, OpenGL, Speech, ColorSync)

However 9.0.4 is just slower that 8.6, and you really arn't getting 
that much more with 9.0.4 that you are with 8.6 on a 2400 (if it were 
at G4 or a iMac, I'd be different)
