The power to the speaker is provided by way of the video cable. Perhaps it
became slightly dislodged when you installed the modem. I kind of doubt it
though because that seems too simple, but you never know.

It might also be a loose connection to the speaker. To check this you would
need to disassemble the screen.  Not a simple task.

You might also (if you haven't already) check the sound out settings in your
Monitor/Sound control panel. Even try Zapping the PRAM (hold down
Option;Command;P;R keys right at startup and release after you here 3
startup tones).
