I have the G3/320 version, which I believe to be a bit stingier on
battery usage. Nonetheless, I thought other Listas would like my
checklist of battery-saving ideas:
1. In energy saver CP, turn off inactive PC cards when on battery. Also
set short spindown, if appropriate to your s/w, and enable processor
cycling.
2. Turn off AppleTalk & TCP/IP so your modem/ethernet card is inactive.
(Alternatively, eject the card before you fly, which would be more
bothersome.) And rumors have it that AppleTalk is a power burner in its
own right because it keeps looking for net services, limiting automatic
slowdowns that energy saver will do. This step alone warrants its own
"In the Air" location for location manager.
3. Dim screen to lowest setting. Not a problem even with your reading
lite on.
4. Use G3/G4Strip to select "no cache when on battery." I barely notice
the slowdown for the reading/writing I do in the air, but if you're
constantly re-calculating big spreadsheets, you might take a less
aggressive option like smaller, slower cache.
5. Sleep the machine before you unplug so you minimize startup hard
drive spinning and processing.
On my (weekly commute) MSP - SFO 4 - 4.5 hour flight, (and using a
2-year old battery) I have enough juice to last during the entire time
that electronics are allowed. The exception is if I run VPC/Win98 or
one of the monster MS Office apps constantly; they challenge the
approx. 3 hr duration since they are constantly working the CPU and
disk like crazy.
Not that I wouldn't mind a Titan if one showed up on my door. But a G3
Comet can be a pretty close substitute if you don't need DVD or the
extra RAM.
