Recently there have been some listers have stated preference for Apple's Virtual Memory (AVM) over Ram Doubler (RD)*. I found quite the reverse after extensive testing on OS 8.6. My problem was getting "premature" "Out of Memory" messages, even on clean reboots w/o fragmented ram on AVM which totally disappeared on RD. MS Office'98 and Adobe Acrobat 4.0 & Reader 4.05 were particularly troublesome. I run CAD apps and VPC as well. The following was tested with G3-2400 320 & 240 upgrades on 112 mb and 80 mb real ram on two different 2400s. On really "cramped" Duos, I think multi-tasking productivity gains will be comparatively even greater. I sent a screen shot of the "About This Computer" to a good friend and fellow lister nearly a year ago, in proof of the following, running 112mb real ram and RD at 2:1--obviously 80 mb 2400s will also benefit accordingly: Built-in Memory 112 mb Ram Doubled To 224 Largest Unused Block 2.5 Acrobat Reader 4.0 6.5 mb Adobe PageMill 3.0 7.9 American Heritage Dict 1.5 Can Opener 4 2.1 Claris Works 1.4 Deltagraph 4.05 4 Disk Warrior 1.1 956 k Excel '98 6.1 mb ** Front Page Explorer 11.8 Internet Explorer 5 8.3 ** Live Picture 2.51 24.1 Mac OS 8.6 71.2 <--- MacProject Pro 1.4 MiniCad 7.01 23.5 Outlook Express 5.02 10 ** PowerPoint '98 10.1 ** QuarkXPress 3.32 11.8 Simple Text 1.4 568 k Stuffit Deluxe 5.5 5.8 mb Word '98 9 ** WriteNow 4.02 2.4 mb*** * no Connectixion to RD ** All MS'98 apps bumped to 16-20 mb memory *** IMO the greatest WP/68k app--still blazes I find AVM unusable on the 2400c. --- Sidney Ho ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
