Well, my 230 was doing the same thing, and I left it plugged in and SHUT
DOWN for a few weeks (the ol' 230 doesn't get much use, you see) and
everything was just dandy last night when I hit the ol' power button.

What happened was this:

1.) PRAM battery died.
2.) Ordered and installed replacement PRAM battery
3.) Startup problems manifested themselve shortly thereafter
4.) Left Duo plugged in and turned off for extended period of time.
5.) Startup problems disappeared.

What I figure is that my old PRAM batt was DEAD. It had discharged and
could no longer hold a charge when recharged. I installed a new battery
that was good, but like all rechargeable batteries, it had to be charged
before it would work. Leaving the Duo plugged in and turned off is the
best way I know of to do this.

Any corrections to my hypothesis welcomed. For the original writer, I
would leave the machine turned off and plugged in for a few days if
possible. Then, if the problem persists, I would order a new PRAM battery
from any of the various suppliers. (The powerbook guy comes to mind)
