The Apple drivers don't care one way or another about your Asante
device (and vice-versa). You can lose them unless you need one for
another ethernet interface in a desktop dock.

Run the Asante installer with the EN/SC attached, and if it doesn't
detect it automatically use a custom install to select it yourself.
There are two pieces of software required for the EN/SC - a SCSI
driver in the form of an extension, and an old-style ethernet driver
that probably still gets installed as a resource in the System file.
Thus even if the proper ethernet driver is installed, it won't see
the device (and won't load) unless the driver for the SCSI half is
also present.

If it works with a hub it will work with a crossover cable. The only
issue is that you may need to make sure the other computer is turned
on and connected first if you're only using AppleTalk - older
versions refused to start up unless they could see another active
interface on the network (which can present a catch-22 when both
sides are doing the same thing with no hub in between). More recent
versions don't have that problem, and if it comes up you can work
around it by just turning on TCP/IP on the same interface (probably
to two addresses on a nonroutable network like 192.168.0.X). This
isn't the problem in your case anyway, because you're not getting
that far.
