After I switched to VPC 4 on my PB2400/G3Cu I found that CPU-intensive
s/w (some programs I'm developing to value options, as well as
benchmark programs) run about twice as fast. My (Borland) development
environment, and Win98 in general, seem faster although I haven't
benchmarked them precisely. Of course, YMMV but the general notion that
only G4's see the big benefit is false.
Win98 on this little machine IS tight. I have a special "location" that
strips out all the "nice to have" stuff like Action Utilities, Control
Strip, as well as some main features of 9.0 like OpenTalk. That gets
the System down to mebbe 13MB, leaving 67 for VPC -- good enough, even
given Win98's and VPC's appetites. A regular 9.0 installation gets to
be difficult, and I haven't gotten satisfactory answers back from
Connectix on memory management under DOS, where much of my stuff can
run.
